Sudoku rules

Fill the 9 × 9 grid with digits from 1 to 9. Each row, column and 3 × 3 box must contain every digit exactly once. Starting clues cannot be changed. Select an empty square and enter a digit using the on-screen keys or your keyboard.

Find candidates before guessing

For an empty square, remove the digits already present in its row, column and box. If one candidate remains, it can be placed. Notes let you keep several possibilities without filling the square. Optional conflict highlighting can reveal repeated digits; having no highlighted conflict does not prove that the completed grid is correct.

A worked single-candidate example

This fictional example is independent of today’s puzzle: a row contains 1, 2, 3, 4, an empty cell, 6, 7, an empty cell, 9. The missing digits are 5 and 8. If the fifth column already contains an 8, the fifth cell must be 5; the eighth cell then takes 8. Check the 3 × 3 boxes too before placing the digits. After each placement, update the notes in cells sharing its row, column or box.

Find a digit with only one possible place

A digit can have just one place in a row even when every empty cell has several candidates. In a fictional example, the missing digits are 2, 5, 7 and 9, and the complete candidate lists for the four empty cells are {2, 7}, {2, 5}, {5, 9} and {2, 9}. Only the first cell allows 7, so place it there. This also works in a column or box. If several places remain possible, examine another area and check that your notes are up to date instead of guessing.

Levels and saved puzzles

Levels use different grids and amounts of starting clues; they are not a precise rating of required solving techniques. Daily has one shared puzzle for everyone. The three levels are available in Unlimited. Unlimited generates fresh grids, and the archive offers earlier days. Entries and notes are saved, and you can pause the timer.
